Essential Driver Training (EDT) Ireland: Complete 12-Lesson Guide
The Essential Driver Training (EDT) course in Ireland is a required set of 12 driving lessons. It helps learner drivers build safer habits and develop confidence on the road.
To begin the EDT, you’ll need a Learner Permit. Once you have it, you must complete twelve one-hour driving lessonsbefore applying for your driving test. These 12 lessons are the legal minimum, but many learners find they need extra practice to drive safely and confidently in real-life conditions. Additional hours often help with handling complex situations and improving road awareness.
Every EDT student receives an Essential Driver Training Logbook. Your ISM ADI Instructor signs the logbook after each lesson to track your progress.
It helps ensure that you meet the required standards and stay on track throughout the course.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) recommends spreading the 12 lessons over the first six months of holding your Learner Permit. This spacing gives you time to absorb each topic and apply the lessons while driving. The RSA also advises taking “filler lessons” in between your scheduled EDT sessions if you feel you need more support.
To improve even faster, it’s a good idea to practice with a sponsor. This can be a parent, guardian, or friend who has held a full driver’s license for at least two years. Just make sure you’re properly insured before practicing with them.
The Benefits of Completing EDT
Taking the full EDT course will help you:
- Become a safer and more confident driver.
- Practice core driving skills in a structured way.
- Build habits that protect you and others on the road.
While EDT is essential, you’ll still need plenty of driving experience to feel fully prepared. Extra practice beyond the lessons will help you become a skilled and responsible driver.
